Professional Development for Arts, Media, and Entertainment Educators

EIF Careers Program supports the professional development and industry education of Arts, Media, and Entertainment (AME) educators, fostering community and collaboration across classrooms and schools.

2023 Educator Roundtable

In April 2023, EIF hosted an Educator Roundtable at Netflix to discuss barriers to sustainable creative careers for students and the type of supports and resources that would address these challenges. 50+ AME middle and high school educators from Los Angeles Unified School District participated, highlighting the need for access to direct work experience and stronger awareness and exposure to the entertainment industry as their top areas of needed support.

Five main takeaways emerged from EIF’s 2023 Roundtables:

Collective action and accountability is needed across stakeholder groups to ensure that aspirations for the future will be met.

Infrastructure (e.g., communication channels, shared resources, co-developed programs) must be built and sustained to enable more meaningful connections across stakeholders.

Students and candidates need ongoing support beyond their first industry access point in order to build momentum and connect to resources that offer better outcomes.

Industry commitment to prioritize and create broader and equitable access to resources and supports (e.g., networking, coaching, set/site visits) is needed to support students

Shared alignment on key aspects of entertainment industry curriculum that support job readiness would be beneficial to both educators and employers.

Tools of the Trade: An Introduction to Below-The-Line Production Careers

In collaboration with International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 80, EIF brought together 50 middle and high school educators from Los Angeles Unified School District’s Linked Learning and Career Technical Education Program in November 2023 to experience a full-day behind the scenes look at movie magic. Educators
witnessed the ins and outs of the cinematic process, from setting the stage to editing, with professionals from set lighting, grips, sound, editing, and more.

Introduction to Careers in Animation

In March 2024, EIF partnered with Nickelodeon to welcome 6th – 12th grade educators from Los Angeles Unified School District, Inglewood Unified School District, and Simi Valley Unified School District at Nickelodeon’s campus to learn more about careers in animation. The day kicked off with an engaging studio tour, followed by presentations and Q&A sessions on the production pipeline and the art of storyboarding, all led by Nickelodeon employees and leaders.
